A lovely union of clean white color and inviting texture, Mansard makes a classic yet fresh complement to today's table settings. First introduced in the 1920s and named after the famous French architect Francois Mansard, the fine bone china features smooth centers and interiors offset by an embossed diamond pattern and subtly raised trimming. The Mansard shape is traditional yet streamlined with wide borders on plates, low round bowls, and narrow, delicately arched handles and spouts. Finished with a crisp semi-gloss glaze, the extensive tableware line transitions from elegant casual to classic formal dining with graceful ease. Mansard has also been used as the basis for many other patterns including Continental Views, Elaine, Forget Me Not, and Virginia; as well as commemorative plates for historic places. There was also a version trimmed in gold as well as one trimmed in platinum.
The most recent version of Spode Mansard was produced from 1994 to 2006. Versions of this pattern that are trimmed with gold or platinum are not safe for use in the microwave.
