The Gatekeeper butterfly is common in southern Britain. Its golden wings are fringed with brown, each with a single ‘eyespot’ to deter birds. This protection may be why the Gatekeeper spends much of its time with its wings open. Moorcroft Pottery designer Vicky Lovatt depicts the Gatekeeper against bright yellow Common Ragwort, soft clouds of Wild Marjoram, and delicately tubelined Bramble blossom and berries.
