Berta Hummel was born in Bavaria in 1909. She had a wonderful gift, an instinct for observing the world around her, especially children, and turning her observations into drawings. She became a nun in 1931 on entering the Convent of Siessen. Franz Goebel noticed her works of art and got the exclusive rights to translate them into china figurines. The first were produced in 1935 and were immediately successful. Tragically Sister Hummel died in 1946 aged only 37 but fortunately, her art lives on to charm the world.
